“God Will Take Care of You!”

Ever feel like your life is just not going like it should?

Civilla Durfee Martin and her husband, W. Stillman Martin, a Baptist evangelist composed gospel songs. Once when her husband was to preach at a Sunday service, Civilla was very sick. When her husband was deciding whether to go or not given his wife’s illness, their young son said to them, “Father, don’t you think if God wants you to preach today, He will take care of Mother while you are away?”

Later that afternoon in 1905, Civilla wrote the hymn many of us have sung, “God Will Take Care of You” (https://www.godtube.com/popular-hymns/god-will-take-care-of-you/).

I thought of that hymn this morning during my Scripture reading. I read about the Israelites leaving Egypt in triumph after God delivered them from Pharoah.

Exodus 13:17-18 reads, “When Pharoah let the people go, God didn’t lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, even though that was the shorter route. God thought, If the people have to fight and face war, they will run back to Egypt. God led the people by the roundabout way of the Red Sea desert. The Israelites went up out of the land of Egypt ready for battle” (CEB).

Did you get that? God directed the Israelites to take a “roundabout way” to the Promised Land in order to avoid battles they weren’t ready to fight. The result was that when they eventually got out of Egypt, they were READY for battle!

God took care of the Israelites even though, I’m sure, they probably didn’t understand why God led them as he did.

How many times has God led you in ways you didn’t understand? Well, perhaps, God was just taking care of you even though you didn’t understand what God was doing. Or, maybe right now, you don’t feel like your life is moving in a straight line. Hey, God is taking care of you!

Let’s pray: God of stubborn love, thank you for taking care of us even when we don’t understand what you are doing. Amen.

 God Bless You!
